Environmental Video Response

Like how Reggie mentioned the flowers breathing, I also found that very appealing. It felt to me like they were gasping for air, which personifies nature, so that we tend to take the issue more seriously. I also liked the music that was used in the video, it was very serious anbd made me want to pay attention to the video. I also really liked that instead of having someone give oral information out, Lucas Oleniuk decided to have short, but meaningful captions on each image. This way it's not like a bunch of words going from one ear out the other and these stats stay engraved into people's minds.

I feel that pollution is a very prominent issue in our environment. Whenever my family and I go to India, we always take turns getting peunomonia and bronchitis. This just shows that there are too many of us and not enough space to contain. We should respect the space we have by keeping it as clean and pure as we can.

Hey Everyone!

Hey guys! I just wanted to say hi to all of you. It's been a while since I've seen most of you. I tried uploading a video but that didn't really work out. I've been feeling just fine and am recovering well. Granted, the painkillers make me a little more jolly than I probably really am. I did go to class today, although I felt like a 90 year old grandma in my walker, and had to use the elevator! I won't be coming to class tomorrow though, so I just wanted to shout out and say I hope I see you all next quarter!

Hi Chaitanya!

Hope you are doing well,Chaitanya! If you can put a video or photos back on the blog we'll love to see you and hear from you!

Miss you!

  Mike

poet

I liked this video of the poet. He was very blunt and said what he wanted to say. No matter what it was? Also that when it first start he talked about how he is not scared to die. He just is sacred to live to long and doesn’t want to outlive his children because he wouldn’t be able to handle himself. He is also very close to his past he said he likes to write about the past and what he thinks about it. For example when he thought he was a fox in the past life. It was really cool how he has been through so much it give him more life experience to write about, where he has been what he has done. And also how he move up and down in classes of life. Over all it was a great video to watch.

Video Response

I really enjoyed watching the video. It gave me a chance to see what someone's views are like by writing poetry to express that view. Poems mean a lot to people, especially to Phillip LeVine. He used his poems to express what he viewed negatively on American Society. The poems about people and society really stood out to me because he tries to get people away from being very political about everything. "When people become too political, they are basically nothing", (LeVine, Phillip).

My Vid Response

Poems seem to mean a lot to Mr. LeVine. He seems to have a huge passion for writing poems and does it on his free time. I'm a little different because I have to be forced to write a poem in school and this guy does it willingly. A quote that stood out to me that Mr. LeVine said wasn't when he was reading one of his poems. It was when a truck backed up behind him randomly when he was being interviewed. He looks at the camera and says "And that is why you don't do interviews outside". I thought it was funny because the van just came out of nowhere and because of that quote I know now that if I'm ever being interviewed it shouldn't be outside. The poems that Mr. LeVine said where very strong and seemed powerful. They had meaning to it and you could learn a lot from that.

Film Response-Levine

I liked the video mainly for the reason of listening to his own life experiences. I thought it was interesting to hear about how Mr. LeVine saw the world eroding at a young age and how he went from a upper middle class family to a more lower class lifestyle. I also thought the advice he was given to sacrifice at a younger age because it won't matter later in life was very good.

Phillip Levine

Poems mean a lot to Levine. He mentioned at the beginning that they're like his source into his memories. He writes about the people from his past and his past. One thing he said was, "I'm bored with the people in my life now so I write about the people I use to know." I thought that was cool that he has a background he can refer to for inspiration when he wants to write.

At the end he talked about how his writing has changed over the years, when he started writing his work was more angry, he was pissed off, and as time went by that changed he became happier. When asked about how he takes care of himself I thought the most interesting thing he said was about how he tries not to lie he just bullshits. When he lies he doesnt like the things that come out of his mouth, he has to like himself to be with himself. I think this is very true for everyone, it's hard to like anyone else and live a good life if you don't like youself.

Phillip LeVine Video Response

Phillip LeVine started off in the upper middle class and moved down in class after his father's death and the depression. He says he most often writes poems that are about memories of his past. the poem he reads out loud first to me is about what a better life would be like just beyond their city Detroit. one live"last night i saw a man break down and cry" this is part of the great depression and the fact that it is a man that is crying is powerful because men aren't suppose to cry. Right? I agree with him that a lot of the things you like when you are young change. For example, I use to be a really big fan of Camille Rose Garcia, but no i don't really like her work as much. I have recently looked back to some of the master painters like Caravaggio, because they mastered real technique, not the new modernism where creativity trumps technique.

resoponse to the film

I like this video. The short film shows many different ways that how does the people destroy our environment. The image that most stood out to me was the car exhaust gas pollution. And I do agree what Lucas said in this video, it is not you fault to drive the car and make the CO2 pollution. Sometimes we can't stop pollution, but we can reduce the pollution at some point. Energy is also a seriously problem that we must be faced today, because all type of energy is limited. It is really a meaningful video, it told us why protect environment is so important.

For Tuesday!

Write a rough draft of Essay Three.  Bring three copies to class for Peer Response.
Extra Credit: Begin to write a poem about a pop culture artist who you think has a positive influence on young people.  You will read this poem to the class for our last class on Thursday, Dec. You will later post a video recording of this poem to our blog and write an introduction for it on the blog.  If you do this, I will give you up to half a grade improvement in your overall class grade.

environment stood

this film was pretty interesting to see and the music was good set for that particular video stood out to me was the images that made it appear the flower enviroments if doet wake up to make their stood no cars no airo plane everthing is going stop with out CO2 engery coal

CO2, Green House Gas, whats going to happen?

I think that this was a great video. I like the way how it started out with the flower. Because no one can sit there and watch something like this happen. Unless you take a video camera or just take still pictures of it every so often and put them together. All together the way this video was put together was really. Watching the plan fly as the jet stream trailed behind it or as the huge construction vehicles drove at a faster pace. Lucas shows a different perspective of many different things. Showing how some stuff for example the flower and how it changes really slowly transformed it into a faster more interesting site. Also he took things that move relatively fast and slowed it down and had short clips telling us about the harmful gasses that they release into the world.
When Lucas had showed the construction vehicles he had a short piece of information saying . The greatest thing to life and civilization was coal. This is because it can be used for many different things although in the long run it may cause damage. Even with plans and aviation he went on and said that it’s the fastest growing thing to release greenhouse gasses into the ozone. The energy demand is so high that by 2030 it will be over 40% which is crazy to think about. And how many people there will in this world all want to flip a switch just to turn on a light not knowing that it will somehow affect you later in life. At the end Lucas talks for a few minutes explaining why he made this video and that he wants someone just one person to watch this video. And to be able to change the world. I think that this is a great thing to do if you are able to do so. I hope the best because it may not affect us right now but later in life it will effect out children and there. Soon enough there won’t be much left on this planet because everyone is over consuming.

Help!

The whole short film was full of interesting photography; however, the image in particular that stood out to me was the housing development that surrounded a small forest. This image show the direct affect of development. Why can't we make accommodations for the forest and help the forest? Instead the forest has to make room for us and we demand that it step aside so we can have more. When is it enough? When are the mansions and shopping centers big enough? Why cant we just use old houses or tare the old rotting houses down for new ones?
Environment is something very near and dear to me, ever since I was a kid. When I was a kid I would go on nature walks and fishing with my dad and family. My dad always tells me about big businesses making waste and dumping it in the nature or how the businesses have no regard for the nature what so ever. I keep on going back to global warming as well i keep on researching it, and the problem only gets worse. Wouldn't it be sad if future generations had no idea what a polar bear was or if they had never seen trees. We need to persevere the nature we have left. It seams there is no end in sight for this sad problem...

Response to Environmental Film

The style of the film was pretty interesting to see and the music was perfectly set for that particular video. It really stood out to me by showing how the fossil fuels that we use is being released into the atmosphere. I have a little concern about how the environment is responding to the use of fossil fuels because there is so much pollution from smoke and smog in the atmosphere. The main idea of the film is to show why using fossil fuels is hurting the environment. It is also trying to make people change the way we look at the use of fossil fuels and to look at alternative use of energy such as wind and solar energy.

Pollution and Resources

The image that stood out to me was the images that made it appear the flower was breathing because it was a smart way of showing how the flowers absorb the CO2 emissions that we put out from burning coal or any other kind of pollution. I like how he made the whole video in gray scale because it made it feel even much dirtier than the idea he was portraying. The thing that concerns me more than the pollution is the fact that we will eventually run out of oil, and the amount of oil we uses on a daily basis to heat every house in America and then multiply that by a year, its almost a miracle that oil hasn't run out already.

Film Response

I really liked the style of the film before Lucas started talking. The 5 minutes of showing the pictures and with the music on looked and sounded pretty cool. The only bad thing about the film was is that I wasn't too sure what Lucas's point was in the video when he said, "we shouldn't fly in planes and drive in cars". I agree that its bad for the environment but he didn't give us an alternative to do instead for driving cars. Its not that people don't care about the environment, its that there isn't much we can do. We need cars to get around. I can't ride my bike to school it would take hours. I have to drive my car its more reliable.

Short Film Response

I think that the personification used by giving the flower the function of breathing really sets up the whole film. It makes people think of pollution in a new light. Like, we're putting all these hazardous things like factory smoke and CO2 emissions from cars into the environment and the plants are just breathing it in. When Lucas talked afterwards about the film, it also made me realize that we're doing this by choice. Us continuing to pollute the air is only shaving years off of a healthy environment. There are plenty of ways that we can cut back on pollution but we as a people are just a bit too naive to do anything about it.

Green is the New Black

There were no particular images alone in the movie that stood out to me. All of it was equally important and sent a message to viewers. If I had to pick one I'd say the images with the plane flying and the caption about aviation being one of the biggest sources for greenhouse gas emission. I never really thought about planes being a contributor to that, but they definitely are. People fly all over the world and use lots of energy with that.

The style of the video was very cool. It kept your attention, it wasn't like some where you have to listen and pay attention some boring guy talk about the point he wanted to get acress. The images, the music, and the quotes were easily absorbed, not hard to follow or understand. I also thought it was sweet how he gave his thoughts and spoke at the end, even when he was talking though there continued to be images and things along with the image of him and his voice. It was very attention-grabbing.

Our environment is something that concerns me, but it's not something that I think about a lot or affects my daily life. I probably leave the light on in my room half the time I leave it, leave things plugged in that I'm not using, or drive places I could walk, so I'm not exactly and environmentalist. I think everyone should be more "green" with their lifestyles, if we could all work together and do this it could make a difference. It's just a matter of changing our ways, which for some, I know it is for me, can be very hard.

Respose from the short film

The images that stood out to me from the short film that we watched in the class is that we burned a gas every single day and the smoke from that makes the air bad and we breath in that air. It may make us to get sick and healthfulness way that we cannot recover it. yes, the environment that we live in has bad pollution because of burned the gas out every day which will effects everything including the trees and the food. The air shouldn't be dirt like that because human been need a better life and clear air to breath in or either way they will not maintain their health every day.

My favorite quote

"Some children who have troubles in their heart don't talk a lot at first but, when they finally do, the things they say can be so beautiful(Kozol page 227)." I like this quote best, beacuse this quote told me children can not ask a help everytime, and sometimes they dont like talk about what happened to them, so we need listen to them and to ask them whether they need help.

In my opinion, the biggest challegen facing high school education in America is money. Many school in America do not have enough money to work with. Many school can not offer the supplies to students, like computer, book or good learn conditions.

Education

On Chapter 18 of Ordinary Resurrections, my favorite quote would be the one on page 233, which describes the relationship between the parents and teachers and admistrators at PS-30. "Teachers and parents stick their heads into the office now and then to say hello or ask ask a questions. '"Not now, Papi,"' she'll say quickly to a teacher - Mr. Bedrock, for example, who is often stopping by to query her about some regulations he dislikes - '"call me tonight."' She stays here almost every night until well after eight o'clock, sometimes as late as nine." This shows the harmony between the student's parents and educators. The biggest challenge facing high schools in America is the lack of funding for those who really need it. They continue funding wealthy schools and don't seem to care about poor schools and this is a discouraging situation. This a huge problem. Kids in poor schools look at this lack of funding and lack of activities, and they lose interest in school, in turn, turning towards gang activity and drug abuse.

MY favorite Quote from The book

"Well," she said, "first you take a cup of flour. Then you mix the eggs and then you pour some milk into the bowl, but not too much. And then you stir it all around and then you pour it on the pan and then it's cooking on the pan and then you look at it until it gets a little brown and then you start to see the little bubbles"-she  looked up and smiled when she said " the little bubbles" __"so you turn it over and you wait and then you go and turn it off, and then you put it on the late."

I think this quote is important because this young girl knows how make a pancake and how mix everything together in order to make the pancake. The girls that like her age may not know how make pancakes and they may not even try to make, but her she can cook for herself and for her family too and at the same time she is too young.

In my opinion, the biggest challenge facing high school education  in America is learning the English for the foreign students, because when you don't speak the language you cannot communicate with anybody and don't even know what is going on your school. It's even hard to comet the classes because you can"t read the signs or the name of the classes.Another one is get to fight with other students and I even get expelled from my school for ten days and that was not good for me or even for any other students who want to to get an education.

The worst thing that can prevent children to get a good education can be their neighborhood or even their family or parents. And the reason is that if the children lives at a very bad neighborhood or violence than can focus on their education. They are going get into fight and trouble everyday and that is not good for them. Also if your parents don't know anything about your education, your grades, how you treat with the teachers and how you are doing in the school, that won't good for such child that goes to school.

I Thing this quote friends (close ones) death have big impact on child education and loss Confidence dropping out school

late on Tuesday afternoon,a nineteen-year-old girl who has been helping mother Martha in the office told me that she went to Morris high school until dropping out about three years ago after a friend of hers was murdered while he walked across a playground near the school. She showed me a memorial card that had been printed for his funeral. The boy's name was Roberto. Sh"d been close to him, she said, and sat beside him in an English class After his death, she had decided to leave school

Education, Mandy

"I am very much aware, uncomfortably so, that I fell into this peculiar habit too, because good friends in Roxbury at last gave me a talking-to. "we don't want you with arms tied behind your back,"a very kind and candid local leader named Paul Parks told me one day when we were coming from a meeting. "That doesn't equalize the game. We know your education. Use it for our children!"' This quote stands out to me in particular, because it is something I feel we all do. We hide our education to those less educated, because we feel guilty for being privileged. We are only hurting these people by doing this, however, we can use our education to speak for them.
I think one of the biggest challenges in high schools is the funding. This year for example the Hilliard city school district levy didn't pass and that was where I went to school, to Hilliard Davidson High School. Since the levy didn't pass they are thinking of cutting the arts programs, which were very important to me in school. I think it's sad that some kids will have to do without these programs. Hilliard Davidson is a middle class school which is much better off than Mott Haven.

My favorite Quote

"Mother Martha's crying," said one of the older girls. (Kozol pg. 259). This is an important quote from the novel because it shows that Mother Martha, despite her position, is expressing her emotions. It shows that people who have positions in religious institutions are only human. I like how the quote really defines how Mother Martha is just like other people.

The biggest challenge that High School students are facing in their education is Drug use among students. The drugs make the students not successful in high school and make them feel as if they have better goals than to receive and education. Drug use often results in students withdraw and not graduate from high school. If the board of education would allow elementary schools to teach young children about the dangers of using drugs and showing examples of the drugs, then there would be a significant change of the percentage of high school graduates.

education in america

My favorite quote is “to get the children interested in the subject of their essays, she began a brief discussion about drugs and various choices that young people might be forced to make.” I say that it’s my favorite because it’s really true. People may not think that drugs are an issue at such a young age but it really is. Young kids look up to the older kids and basically so what they do because they want to be just like them. So if one of the older kids offers a younger kid drugs most likely he or she will take it. Once they start young they will do it throughout high school because all the “cool” kids will be doing it so there is really no escaping from the problem.
One of the biggest thing that I think are preventing children from getting a good education. Would be their home lives. I say that because everyone is different at home. Also every home has their problems it’s just that people don’t show it they all hide their issues. I feel that if other people feel that they will be judge for what happens at their home. Also another reason could have to deal with money. If the family is really short on money they might not be able to offered school. Yet some school is free they don’t want to be embarrassed by what they have to wear of where they come from.

Education

My favorite quote from the chapters that we read for today was on page 241.

"And I beg you, children, each and every one of you, to come to me and tell me when you're feeling sad and never think you need to be alone with your own thoughts. I'm always here for you. That's what our church is for, that's why we're here, because we love you and we want you to be happy and we always have you in our hearts."

I picked this quote because I thought it was very nice for the children to be able to hear that someone loves them and is there for them and cares about their well-being. That is very important for children to have, and most of these children don't have this outside of the church.

I think that the biggest challenge facing high school education in America is the students themselves and the atmosphere of the school. I think thata lot of students these days don't have as much motivation to work hard and are much more focused on other things in their life above school. Also, teachers are becoming more and more like their students friends rather than being an authority and that causes students to not take school as seriously. I think that negative influences (classmates, parents, siblings...) are the biggest problem that prevent children from getting a good education. If they do not have motivated encouraging parents, they will become discouraged. Also, if their older siblings have negative attitudes about school, they will most likely develop one too.

Education

"The office at P.S. 30 is a friendly and inviting place for the children and, no less important, for the parents of the neighborhood, who often feel an understandable anxiety in visiting a public school. Some of them went to the schools and did not have good memories. Many never finished high school and don't think of schools as places of remembered victories. Miss Rosa tries to make each contact with a child's parents welcoming enough so they'll be eager to return."

I think this quote was important because it shows P.S. 30 really cares about the children and their family/parents. It's important for the parents to get involved in their child's education in order to improve the child's learning. With parents involved it helps the children become more involved in really learning and getting a good education.

I think the biggest challenge facing high school education in America is the attitudes of the students and the enviroment. Someone coming from a good background will most likely get a better education than one coming from a challenged background. Drugs, violence, peer pressure, drinking, etc. all affect students. Their involvement or lack of involvement in these activities affects their overall attitude. If they're involved they will more than likely be much less interested in school and learning. Those who aren't involved focus more time and effort on school in order to stay out of these activities.

My Fav Quote

"Some children who have troubles in their heart don't talk a lot st first but, when they do the things they say can be so beautiful"(Pg 227).

I really like this quote and its also very important to understand. The quote means that we should really listen to what these children say so that we can help them also we can learn from what the children say. If we don't listen to when a child talks we can never find out if he/she is in trouble or needs help. Sometimes kids don't like to talk about what is happening to them so we have to talk to them and ask so that they can open up.

The biggest challenge I think schools face is the school funding. Many schools in the U.S don't have much money to work with. This doesn't to allow the student to learn what they need to know. Some schools may not have the school supplies and technologies like computers to work with. A big thing they don't have much of are the school books. How can student learn if they don't have school books? Without all that student become less interested in school that they decide to drop out because of how unsuccessful they are in school.

Challenges in schooling

"Some of the parents come here, as they also come into St. Ann's, at times of crisis in their lives. Some are having bad financial problems and will tell Miss Rosa frankly that they have no food." (Kozol, 233)
I think this quote is important because its shows some of the problems that families in the neighborhood are having. It also shows how the church for many families, is a place of safety and help and a place for them to come gather.

I think the biggest problem facing education in America is money especially now a days since the economy isn't very good. With the lack of money some schools cannot afford the right supplies or to fix things in the school building, which makes it very hard for some kids to learn. I think the biggest issue with preventing children from getting a good education is the environment that the kids are living in. Sadly, a kid who is raised in a poor city where drugs are on every corner and it is a poor city are not going to have nearly as many opportunities as a kid raised in a wealthy area and good schooling.
